Day dedicated to sheep farming and breeding sheep and goats!
Visit to the main pastoral caves along the Fara valley. During summer we will have the opportunity to be acquainted with one of the last shepherds of Majella. He still practices the ancient process of monticazione (a vertical transumanza) remaining in the cave without electricity and running water.
Program:
7:00 a.m.: meeting and welcome to Centro Visite – Museo Naturalistico del Parco Nazionale della Majella di Fara San Martino in Piazza Municipio (Fara San Martino). Leaving with your car from the parking lot in front of the Gole of San Martino and beginning of hiking (hike level, i.e. trails along paths consist of ground of various kinds: earth, debris, rocks and require a good workout to walk and sense of direction) .
During the excursion, we will get to 2,000 meters, and will visit the main pastoral caves in the area of Fara S. Martino, in the valleys of Macchia Lunga and Mandrelle. Many of these, now abandoned, testify through presence of tools left by shepards the ancient process of monticazione and the skill and care they used in the ancient cheese-making operations.
During summer you can meet Domenico, the last shepard in the Majella Mountains; he still practices the process of monticazione and he remains for much of the summer with the flock sleeping in cave as in the ancient time.
