Roccamorice,Santo Spirito a Majella hermitage

Roccamorice and the Santo Spirito a Majella hermitage

With Maria Fantone

Maria Fantone

Among the hermitages and authentic villages of Abruzzo

Starting from the visit to Santo Spirito a Majella Hermitage, we'll call back  the milestones of the staying of Pietro da Morrone, future Pope Celestine V, later canonized by the name of Pietro Confessore

We will visit the unique structure of a hermit, carved into the rock, just one example of ecclesiastical architecture to the limits of constructive possibibilities: where nature and architecture come together in a unique mix.

We climb along the Scala Santa, telling stories and legends related to the figure of the hermit pope, who so much loved the Abruzzo.

After lunch (packed lunch or if you prefer in a suggested restaurant) the tour continues to Roccamorice: an Authentic Village of Italy!

In this small hamlet, in the green of the Majella National Park you can feel the history: it's present in its urban appearance, in its place names and it can be admired in the surviving monuments.

Nestled on a spur of rock that rises between two creeks the  Lavino and the Lannella, Roccamorice retains its most valuable works of art inside the church of San Donato and the former Church of the Annunziata, now center of art and culture "Alberto Di Giovanni".

The village was a fief of the Counts of Manoppello, then went briefly to the Orsini. In the fifteenth century, it was among the possessions of the powerful family of Valignani and finally it was acquired by the family Zambra in the eighteenth century.
