Lanciano: treasure chest and culture

If you are spending holidays in Abruzzo it's certainly worth visiting Lanciano, a town founded by a companion of Aeneas the Trojan War veteran. Already known during the Roman Empire for its important trade fairs which attracted merchants and buyers from all parts of the known world, the city is accessed from the main deck, called 'Bridge of Diocletian'. The city walls preserved artistic masterpieces of inestimable value, reflecting the economic and cultural prosperity of ancient Lanzano. The entire city is an architectural scenario, where you can admire the ancient medieval shops still perfectly preserved, as well as the Jewish ghetto and some defense towers. The visit to the church of St. Francis, that conserves in a valuable urn the testimonies of the first Eucharistic Miracle, will be followed from the entrance of an example of Gothic architecture, consisting of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose facade is engraved with the name of the master architect who built it in 1317, Francesco Petrini from Lanciano.
