Barrea: the ancient Vallis Regia

Barrea, authentic village of Italy, is surrounded by  the National Park  of Abruzzo's landscape but it's also history and archeology. The Safina Necropolis of Colleciglio has returned many testimonies of a very  distant past, some of which we'll see in the new Municipal Antiquarium  of Civilta' Sannita, a unique Museum  in Italy, devoted almost entirely  to infantile burials. We'll go through a tematic path enlightening  on a  little known aspect of the funeral rites of the early inhabitants of  the valley.

Trip program: we'll travel along the  narrow streets, alleys and squares of the old town, like a trip back in time. We will enter the ancient church of San Tommaso Apostolo, climb the steep stairs leading to the castle, search for the Porta di Sotto and, nearby, the remains of the Benedictine monastery. We will enjoy the  beautiful views of the valley, the magnificent sunset with the sun mirrored in the lake. On the other side you will enjoy the Foce  deep canyon carved by the Sangro river and now only frequented by birds  of prey. In the village you can enjoy some of the local products:  meats, cheese, salami and many different pastries, depending on the occasion or the season. And in the end we'll visit the Municipal Antiquarium of Safina Civilization .

We will then move to the Museum of Transhumance of Villetta Barrea where we'll have a typical merenda.
