Castel di Sangro: Patini's Hometown

The town was crossed by the tratturo (sheep tracks) Lucera-Castel di Sangro one of the oldest of the Dogana of Foggia as well as by other tratturi (Pescasseroli-Candela) and tratturelli. For this reason a public Customs  was set up in Castel di Sangro at the Convento della Maddalena for the control of the animals concerned to transhumance and for control of the goods. The current village was the site of the ancient Aufidena, a stronghold Sannita and later Roman . The archaeological material unearthed in the past is now collected in the Museo Civico Aufidenate established in 1898 and restored at the Convento della Maddalena (1400). On the Colle San Giovanni, overlooking the village, stand out  stately and showy the Ciclopiche-Sannitiche walls that were incorporated in the Roman fortifications and in the ruins of the Castello dei Di Sangro.

Trip program: guided tour in the historical center of Castel di Sangro and the Basilica of S. Maria Assunta, designed by F. Lombard Ferradini, dating back to 1695, rich in valuable works of art. Visit to the Palazzo de Petra with the Pinacoteca Patiniana (Art Gallery) and Convento della Maddalena-Museo Aufidenate.
