Fossils and the Necropolis

The site dates back about 10 million years ago, i.e. at the lower Tortonian (Upper Miocene). At the time this area was next to a river mouth and home to a coastal plain. This is why there were favorable conditions  to the accumulation and subsequent fossilization of important faunal communities. The fossils belong to more than one species of insect-eating giants, primitive   artiodactyls , birds , crocodiles and marshland and ground turtles. Among the fossils on display in the museum center , the most interesting are the remains of primitive artiodactyls , all belonging to the genus Hoplitomeryx , which gave the name to the documentation center.  A mile away from the documentation center, the village of Alfedena , is the ancient Aufidena of the Sanniti Pentri a pre-roman popolation allocated in the Alto Val di Sangro since the seventh century BC until the arrival of the Romans who wrote their history. A witness to the importance of the ancient pre-Roman Aufidena is the huge necropolis of Campo Consolino that returned a large quantity of findings, among the most striking exhibited at the Museo Archeologico A. De Nino: discs armor , weapons, and jewelry of breathtaking beauty.
