You will enjoy the exclusive stunning view of Campo Imperatore, a plateau at an altitude of 1600m, named the Italian Tibet.
The plateau of Campo Imperatore is nearly 1600m altitude from north west to south east for over 25km, with a maximum width of almost 8Km. It is difficult to think that above this sort of insurmountable barrier lurks one of the most amazing wonders of Abruzzo: Campo Imperatore. Formerly this vast camp was called Campo Imperiale, name given by Federico II of Sweden and originally was partly occupied by a large marshy lake originated by the low disappearance of the glaciers that shaped these rocks for millions of years. On September 3, 1943 in room 201 (now 220) of the only existing hotel present at that time in Campo Imperatore, was imprisoned Benito Mussolini. With a daring operation carried out by German paratroopers on gliders, on September 12 he was released and boarded a small plane landed with great difficulty on the plateau. The rest is recent history and that room has now become a small museum open to visitors.
