Good Friday 2022 in Chieti, Culture, History and emotional experience.
With Cristina Saraullo
Good Friday in Chieti. The procession of the Dead Christ returns. A cultural walk, experience of history and emotion.
The Good Friday procession of Chieti returns according to tradition. Observing the prudential safety measures, the long-awaited procession will therefore be held on Friday 15 April. With a limited number of spectators.
Guided tour of Chieti, the ancient Roman Teate, in the past the city of the Marruccini people. Visit to the historic center, to the main monuments related to the Roman period. Discover the history of one of the oldest cities in Italy among the numerous testimonies of the past, and more recent monuments and buildings from the era. An evocative walk that culminates in attending the Good Friday procession.
The procession of the dead Christ has been taking place for centuries in Chieti on Good Friday, accompanied by the poignant song of the Miserere set to music in 1767 by Saverio Selechy, a Theatine musician. The Chieti Good Friday procession is perhaps the oldest in Italy and undoubtedly remains one of the most important events of the Abruzzese Holy Week.
Symbols of the Passion, statues of the Virgin of Sorrows and the Dead Christ, with the orchestra (made up of 150 elements) and the choir (160 elements) will walk the streets of the historic center. It is the city itself that slowly passes by, while remaining motionless. The spectators enter into silent collective communion in what remains an experience steeped in history and emotion.
