Capestrano

Capestrano: Photographic walk to discover the Tirino river.

With Francesco Puglielli

Francesco Puglielli

Among willows, coots and a thousand shades of green, the most limpid watercourse in Europe: the river Tirino.

Tritano is the ancient name of the river Tirino that comes from the Greek and that means triple source. The karst origin and its springs are the secret of the river considered among the most limpid in Europe. Directly from the Gran Sasso, its pristine waters are characterized by abundance and purity.
The river Tirino is rich in colors of life both in the water and all around. Many species nest and live among the reed beds and gray willows. It is possible to admire coots, water dives, pochards and grebes while on the ancient willows, you can observe garzaias and gray herons.
Our route starts from the Ponte San Martino. A professional photographer, who has chosen to live in these places for some years, will tell you about her love for the river Tirino and the wonderful nature that surrounds it.

Before introducing you to nature photography, she will share with you some reflections on photography, on the very meaning of "photography", which she has developed over many years of experience and she will suggest you to stop and reflect before taking action.
A pleasant walk along the banks of the river, will be an opportunity to grasp, with love and attention, the details that the unspoiled landscape of the Valle del Tirino offers.
Our first stop is the Vecchio Casino (Old Casino) along the river, where with some luck we will have a chance to meet its owner, a vet who is dedicated to painting, and to chat with him who knows the river since he was a boy. The stop will also be useful to photograph the coots and crystal clear waters of the Tirino.

Continuing the journey you will arrive at the Abbey of San Pietro ad Oratorium immersed in the woods on the left bank of the river, in a particularly silent and suggestive place. A church full of mysteries linked to the "Square of Sator", the most enigmatic element of the building, a written palindroma that can be read from left to right and from right to left, from top to bottom and from bottom to top . Also present in other ancient places, he cites the words "rotas opera tenet arepo sator" of which, even today, the meaning is discussed.
It will be possible, during the break, to photograph both the outside and the inside of this considerable testimony wanted by King Desiderio and whose foundation dates back to 752.
After the visit to the church, we will continue towards the panoramic point of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, where the photographic walk will end upon one of the most amazing view of the Tirino.

Not far away there are the tables and benches of the picnic area where we will enjoy a light lunch at the basket based on local products.

Among the greetings and hugs, still some photographs as memento, to share on social networks with friends and relatives left at home.
