Abruzzolink: guided tours with locals

Bussi sul Tirino (PE)

Bussi: Canoa walking along the Tirino River

With Paolo Setta

Among the Tirino and the Claudia Nova road.

In the middle of the first century B.C. the emperor Claudius gave orders to build a consular road that served as a link between the city of Rome and the middle Adriatic side.

The road that crossed the territory of Vestini, before reaching the Valeria also crossed the current Navelli Plan and the Valle del Tirino.

It is very likely that some of the tratturi, which, during the transhumance period, furrowed the Abruzzi territory from the Campo Imperatore plateau to reach the warm plains of Puglia, coincided with some stretches of the Via Claudia Nova.

It was in the Valle del Tirino, along the banks of the river that is considered one of the most beautiful and cleanest in Europe, with its limpid and icy waters, which many activities that characterized the economy until the early twentieth century were concentrated.

We will leave from the Centro Visite Fiume Tirino di Bussi sul Tirino and we'll go up to the banks of the river following the footpath just outside the town of Bussi and we'll reach the old consular road Claudia Nova, today a dirt path bordered by a multitude of oak trees, typical vegetation of the Valle del Tirino, together with the  Bosso plant, symbol of our working group.

Arrived in Cirichiello place, after walking along the Claudia Nova for about 2.5 km, with the opportunity to enjoy landscapes that clearly look at the Gran Sasso Massif, we'll reach the Accompagnatori di Canoa della soc. coop. Il Bosso.

So, after wearing the life jackets and after having understood the basic rules  necessary for a safe navigation, we will embark on the Canadian canoes labeled #ilbosso, from Cirichiello toward Bussi sul Tirino, in the direction of the Tirino River Visitor Center .

The fluvial descent will be an opportunity to enjoy the reflections of the sun through the lush vegetation that runs along the river and to see and to listen to the avifauna among the wild reeds and grassy meadows along the banks of what is certainly one of the most captivating water courses in Italy and in Europe.
