Castiglione a Casauria, San Liberatore a Majella

9:30  Serramonacesca (Pe)
Visit of the San Liberatore a Majella Abbey. The church consecrated to Christ the Liberator, was founded on the site where, according a legend, the paladins of Charlemagne defeated the Franks after the 800. The first mention of the building in historical documents dates back, however, in 1007. The church was a dependence of the  Monte Cassino Abbey, San Liberatore was the Benedictine outpost in the region and in turn had many possessions in the neighboring areas. The only remains of the original monastery are the church with the bell tower and the remains of the perimeter wall, but in ancient times, as attested by a plant of 1700, the complex had the monks' cells, a library, gardens, furnaces for the production of glass and other functional objects to the life of the monastery. To see inside: the cosmatesque floor mosaic of 1275, two cycles of frescoes that tell the story of the founding and the ambo "reassembled" with slabs carved stone recovered in the neighboring parish of Serramonacesca.

11:45am    Castiglione a Casauria (Pe)
Visit of the San Clemente a Casauria Abbey . According to legend it was built in 871 AD, by the Emperor Ludwig II, grandson of Charlemagne, because of a vow made during his captivity in the  Benevento duchy. The Abbey, originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was then consecrated to San Clemente when, in 872 his remains where moved there. The splendid building has only recently reopened after restoration in the wake of extensive damage of the earthquake of 2009. Inside you can admire: the ambo, the candelabrum, the urn and the altar made of Majella's stone. Outside there is a collection of Roman tombstones preserved and collected by Pier Luigi Calore, scholar and friend of D'Annunzio.
