Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Abruzzo Medieval Sistine Chapel.
I will guide you to explore the most fascinating and important medieval treasures in Abruzzo.
L'Aquila has got a very rich artistic area and some of its cultural medieval artifacts are the most important and best preserved in Italy
The Oratory of San Pellegrino in Bominaco has on its walls a fresco cycle dating back to 1263 that earned it the name of "Medieval Sistine Chapel".
Close to it, the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta, a gift of Charlemagne to Farfa Abbey, is part of the monastic complex.
In the medieval village of Sextantio ( Latin name of Santo Stefano di Sassanio ) we'll find the same medieval culture of Bominaco expressed in the civic structure. This village of about 120 inhabitants, as well as being part of the club of the " most beautiful villages in Italy " , also falls within the territory of the National Park of Gran Sasso - Monti della Laga.
Losing yourself in the narrow streets of the village you will admire numerous picturesque spots, and see the Medici Tower, which was hit severely by the earthquake of 2009.
Eventually after a few kilometers you will reach Rocca Calascio, one of the highest castle in Europe at an altitude of 1520m.
With a breathtaking view over the valley of Tirino and Navelli it has been the setting for several movies among which " Lady Hawke " .
