S. Pietro di Isola,Azzinano,Montorio al Vomano,Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park
At the foot of Gran Sasso, in between nature and tradition.
With Emanuela Verdone
A walking tour to discover the Park and the Museum of the Waters.
Please note: This tour is recommended for travelers partially-sighted and visually impaired, but also for families with children.
Immersion in a little world of relationships face to face at the foot of the rocky scenery of Gran Sasso. The tour includes a walk along the Acquatina trial, in the natural park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, a visit to the Museum of the waters, and later visit to the villages of Azzinano and Montorio al Vomano.
Starting from the Museum of the waters starts an easy path of about 1 km (an average gradient: 3%) called Acquatina trail.
The walk is suitable for people with disabilities and especially for the visually impair, infact the path has signs in braille and provides a handrail in many places. The end point of the path is 815 meters above sea level.
At lunch we can stop at a local restaurant, where traditional dishes are prepared with local ingredients and seasonal products (the price for the full menu is about 20 euro). Alternatively, if the weather permits, we can organize a picnic with local organic produce.
Second stop over. Second stop over. In the afternoon we move to Azzinano, famous for its naive murals made by artists from all over Italy. The murals describe the ancient games. Together we'll go through this journey of the imagination, with the help of songs that tell us about a vanished world.
Third and last stop over: Stop in Montorio al Vomano, door of the park, a nice town having a specific cultural tradition, as shown by some events that take place during the year. Among them, in September, "a showcase of the park" and during the Ash Wednesday a suggestive funeral - parody of the "Dead Carnival ".
After a walk through the old town, through its narrow alleys having evocative names, we'll visit the of the Crèche and the Ancient Crafts Museum; inside we'll admire the private collection of John Gavioli. The artist in over 30 years has collected thousands of ancient tools of rural culture, and has reconstructed miniature scenes from everyday life, mostly animated, depicting the life in the Abruzzi from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The collection has been set up at the lovely Cloister of Zoccolanti, perfectly renovated for this purpose. If possible, a meeting is planned with the artist who will tell us about his experience and allow us to touch a few pieces of his collection.
